- Alphabets may stay the same over time, but how they are written - the style of letters they use - changes over the centuries. In English, for example, typography and letter forms have become simpler and simpler over time. The earliest printed Bibles in the 1500s, for example, were typographical works of art. They had colour, decorative pictures to illustrate the text, elaborate and very beautiful fonts, multiple sizes and font styles per page, dropped capitals, elaborate chapter headings, marginal notes, and many other attractive features. The letter styles themselves were very beautiful and elaborate. They had complicated letter forms with serifs on each letter.
