- We have seen that Ashuri is the Aramaic script which Jews have traditionally used for thousands of years for the Hebrew Bible. Following the Babylonian exile where Jews in large numbers were exported to Babylon and had to learn and speak Aramaic, Aramaic increasingly became the dominant language among Jews. The Ashuri script was originally an Aramaic script, but it was adopted by the Hebrew language and has been used by Hebrew ever since. Thus, most people think of Ashuri as being "Hebrew letters", but they are actually (originally) Aramaic.
