- It is difficult to put exact timescales and geographical limits on when and where the change from Estrangela to Serta started to take place, and the exact details are probably not important. But most likely around the 5th century A.D., Serta started to be used, mainly in areas around modern-day Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Turkey (i.e. the ‘West’ of the Middle East), hence the reason why Serta is sometimes called a ‘Western’ script. In any case, once developed, both scripts have continued in use right down to the present day.
